With the rise of AI tools like ChatGPT, we're witnessing a significant transformation in how candidates approach their job applications. Recent insights from the Financial Times reveal that nearly 50% of job seekers are using generative AI to write their CVs and cover letters. This trend has led to a dramatic increase in the volume of applications, with some recruiters reporting that the number of candidates per job has more than doubled.
However, this surge in AI-generated applications comes with a trade-off. Many of these applications are described as "bland" and "generic," often lacking the personal touch that sets candidates apart. For instance, recruiters have noted "tell-tale signs" of AI usage, such as the presence of American grammar or a lack of personal storytelling. Victoria McLean, CEO of CityCV, emphasised that while AI can help polish a CV, it can't capture a candidate's personality, passions, or unique experiences.
Moreover, in a survey of 2,500 UK workers by HR start-up Beamery, 46% admitted to using generative AI to assist in their job search. Another poll of 5,000 global job seekers by Canva found that 45% had used AI to build or enhance their CVs. Interestingly, candidates who paid for advanced versions of AI tools, like ChatGPT, were significantly more likely to pass psychometric tests compared to those using free versions, highlighting a growing divide based on socio-economic status.
In our experience, while a polished, AI-generated CV might help candidates get through initial screenings, it’s the in-person interview that remains critical—especially in fields like manufacturing, where practical skills and teamwork are essential. The interview process is where employers can truly assess a candidate's fit for the role, beyond what's on paper.
As the job market continues to evolve, it's clear that while AI can be a useful tool, the human element—how candidates perform in interviews, communicate their experiences, and demonstrate their skills—will always be the deciding factor in securing a job. A well-crafted CV might open doors, but it’s the interview that ultimately seals the deal.
